Mission of the Gloversville Library Foundation, Inc.
To manage the assets of the Foundation for the maximum benefit of the Gloversville Library; pay over all dividend and interest income of such assets (less any Foundation expenses) to the Gloversville Library on a monthly basis; and raise funds for the Foundation so as to benefit the Gloversville Library.
Legacy of Past Generations
Our Library was established in 1880 by Judge Levi Parsons as a subscription library. In 1888, it became a free library open to all by virtue of the financial support of the people of Gloversville.
In 1902, Andrew Carnegie gave the Library $50,000 for a building with the understanding that the site be furnished and the facility be maintained by the City of Gloversville. The citizens raised $11,000. The cornerstone was laid in July of 1904 and the current building opened in 1905.
For more than 100 years, many generous gifts and bequests received from the community have enabled the Library to build an endowment fund managed by the Gloversville Library Foundation. Today this fund generates enough income to cover 40% of the Library’s annual operating expenses.
Security for the Future—How Can You Help?
There are many ways to provide future financial support to the Gloversville Public Library through the Gloversville Library Foundation.
Some of these include:
Direct contributions
Bequests
Charitable Remainder Trusts
Retirement Plan Assets
Life Insurance
Your attorney, accountant or financial planner can review these with you and assist you in choosing the option which best reflects your intent. Your gift to the endowment fund will continue to generate income for the library perpetually while becoming part of this community’s proud legacy.
