The Historical Room includes approximately 1200 volumes which cover the Cities of Gloversville and Johnstown; Fulton, Montgomery, Schoharie, Saratoga, Albany, and Schenectady Counties; the Mohawk Valley, and the Adirondacks.

Local history room as it was in the mid 1950's

The collection includes Fulton County Cemetery Records; city directories for Gloversville and Johnstown back to the 1860s; old atlases of Fulton and Montgomery Counties; some family genealogies; as well as histories of New York State and New England. Back issues of the Leader-Herald, 1964 to present, are available on microfilm and can be printed at a cost of 10¢ per page.

The New York State Library does have newspapers for Fulton County on microfilm, but will only loan them to other libraries. We can assist you in loaning reels.

Unfortunately, the Library DOES NOT have an obituary file or access to issues of the Leader-Herald before 1964. The Johnstown Public Library does maintain an obituary file and can be reached at 518-762-8317.

Historical Room materials cannot be checked out of the library.

The Documentarian

The Documentarian is a website which exhibits 70 images of historical and genealogically interest from the Mohawk Valley area. Seven of the fourteen libraries in the Mohawk Valley Library System contributed materials to this project. In each case, their donations are only the tip of the iceburg of information available.

Funding for this project was provided by the Mohawk Valley Library System and Federal Library Services and Technology Act funds, granted to MVLS by the New York State Library.
