Trustee Openings

As a school district public library, the trustees who govern the Library are elected by the voters of the Library's service area, the boundaries of the Gloversville Enlarged School District.

In 2016 there are two openings, both for 5 year terms.  Duties include: Attendance at monthly board meetings, participation in committees, acting as an advocate, oversight of finances.

Petitions to be placed on the annual ballot require 25 signatures from registered voters who reside within the Library service area and are due to the Library by 4 pm on Saturday, April 2, 2016.

The election will be held on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 from 11am-8pm.

Winter Challenge

2015 was a very exciting year for the “Honoring Our Past, Building Our Future” campaign.  In just 12 months $3.2 million was raised through donations, pledges and grants bringing the campaign’s current total to $5.5 million!  With a ground breaking coming up quickly the rest of the fundraising needs to be in hand for the final pieces of the campaign to click into place. 

In support of that goal, the Steering Committee for the Library’s capital campaign is delighted to announce that a group of past donors has come together to issue a new “Winter Challenge” that has the potential to bring the project a quarter of a million dollars closer to the goal.  

Because of their strong belief in the importance of the Library to the community, they will match any NEW donation or pledge made before March 15 up to $125,000.

During this challenge your new donation will be worth twice the amount of your gift because it will be matched dollar for dollar by the challengers. If you have been considering making a pledge, or are thinking about an additional gift, this would be a wonderful time to do so.

Income Tax Information

Tax forms

All of the state forms have arrived.

The federal forms are limited to the 1040 + instructions, 1040 EZ + instructions, 1040A + instructions.  There are no schedules this year, but Library staff can assist with printing those and any other forms that are needed.  Printing costs .10 per page.

Tax Preparation Assistance

The Library is partnering again with the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance to assistance with the filing of both the state and federal forms.  This program is open to anyone with an income of less than $62,000 for 2015.  Volunteers are available on Tuesdays during tax season and appointments are required.  Please call the Library for more details. 518-725-2819.

Thanks to the efforts of the Mohawk Valley Library System and the Schenectady County Public Library all public library patrons in Fulton, Montgomery, Schoharie and Schenectady counties can freely borrow over 70 eMagazines.

This services through Zinio and paid for by state aid given to the library system for shared service projects.

Patrons can click on the Quick Links tab above, click on Zinio from the drop down menu, and establish an account with the provider. You will need a Calais library card from a public library in one of the four counties above mention per above.


Once you establish an account download the 'Zinio for libraries' app to your tablet or phone.

Multiple users may read the same issue at the same time.
The titles will not expire after a specific number of days.
And you can set up alerts to notify you when the next issue of your favorite magazine has been published.

Library receives another $1,000,000

The Library Capital Campaign Co-Chairs, Christine Pesses and Elizabeth Batchelor, announced new commitments to the Library Campaign of $1 Million from New York State. The grants, $500,000 for building renovation and $500,000 for upgrading infrastructure including the Library’s 111 year old heating system, were secured through the State’s Combined Funding Application (CFA) and brings the library renovation within striking distance of a 2016 construction start.

“We deeply appreciate the State’s assistance as we transform our Library into a 21st century learning center,” said Christine Pesses, Campaign Co-Chair. “These extraordinary investments bring us significantly closer to putting a shovel in the ground next year.”

“Securing these funds required a supreme team effort, and we are thrilled by the impact this will have on the Library and the community,” said Elizabeth Batchelor, Campaign Co-Chair. “We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Barbara Madonna, our Library Director for the countless hours she put in crafting the proposal. We also would like to express our deepest thanks to Ron Peters of the Center for Regional Growth, who has been a vocal advocate of our project since day one, and to our legislative delegation.”

The grants advance the goal of the Capital Campaign to modernize and expand the Library, which was built in 1904 and has never been significantly renovated. The project, sponsored by the Gloversville Library Foundation, will transform the iconic Carnegie building by upgrading all systems, including replacing the furnace, and will provide access to all levels by adding an elevator. There will also be a 6,000 square foot Youth Center created in the entire lower level that will be devoted to inspiring and promoting lifelong learning and a love of reading in children and teens. The Library will have the latest technology to enable self-directed learning, workforce training and business development, and new programming spaces will serve community groups, supplemental education programming and cultural activities.
