Some facts about graphic novels—

  • Colorful pictures grab the reader's attention.
  • Pictures help tell the story through visual action.
  • Following the action can help introduce new words.
  • Following the action demonstrates the beginning, middle, and end of a story.
  • Comics and graphic novels include characters, themes, settings, points of view, symbolism, conflict and resolution. All elements of a good story.
  • Help kids understand inference, "the ability to draw a conclusion about something unknown from facts or evidence."  They can predict what will happen in the story based on what they have been told already.
  • Not all comics and graphic novels are fiction.
  • Comics and graphic novels are also art.
