Here it is folks. The moment you've all been waiting for; the unveiling of our 2014 title.

This year we will be focusing on what is closest to home, Gloversville: Past, Present and Future as we read....Mohawk by Richard Russo and explore our little peace of the planet history, literature, food and fun.

The program schedule will appear soon. In the meantime, visit the Library or Mysteries on Main Street to get a copy of Mohawk.

Openings on Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees of the Gloversville Public Library will have 3 openings on this year's ballot.  Trustees must be 18 years old and residents of the Gloversville Enlarge School District.  Terms begin July 1, 2014.  2 openings for 5 years, 1 opening for 1 year.

Anyone interested in running, election is by the voters of the Gloversville Enlarged School District, must turn in a petition with 25 or more legal signatures.  Petitions and information can be obtained here or picked up at the Library. Packet. Petition (8 1/2" x 14" paper needed).

The election will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 in the Library.

And the nominees are....

Well, we don't know yet.

The nomination period for the 3rd annual Gloversville READS! is officially open, and everyone in the community is asked to put forth their favorite read for 2014.

Nominations will be accepted between Monday, October 28th through Tuesday, November 26th, 2013.  The Library is offering two different ways community members can nominate a title (and author); using a paper ballot or an electronic submission.  Paper nomination forms are available at the Library, on posters around town, and in the Leader-Herald on Mondays throughout the nomination period.  Folks can submit online by going directly to SurveyMonkey (www.surveymonkey.com/s/HR9SNC9) or using a QR code with the SurveyMonkey address imbedded.

The first READ held in 2012 focused on baseball and featured the title Shoeless Joe by Ray Kinsella.  The 2013 title, Following Atticus, was chosen by community vote and was celebrated by a variety of programs including a visit by the author Tom Ryan, Atticus himself and their new family member, Will.

A good READ title brings a community together through a common book.  By reading, discussing, and exploring the topic with related programming a community strengthens its commitment to reading while finding out new details about itself and its citizens. Following Atticus certainly accomplished those goals.

Community-wide voting to choose the winning book will take place after the first of the year.

Friends' Celebration Update

For the seventh year in a row, the Friends of the Gloversville Public Library hosted a successful Celebration fundraiser. The event took place last Sunday, Sept. 22, in the Library. The event raised over $28,000, which helped to round out the funding needed to complete the Library’s window renovation project.

Chairwomen Lyn Kicinski and Betsy Bachelor extend their gratitude to the dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors.

Celebration Update

This year’s Celebration is right around the corner. If you haven’t marked you calendar already, it’s September 22, from noon to 2 p.m. at the library. Join us while we “Celebrate the People of the Adirondacks.” Tickets are $30 per person and are due by September 13. Please submit this reservation form with payment.

Gracious donors have made a wonderful basket raffle possible again this year. The raffle baskets are on display in the library. Tickets can be purchased for $1 each or six for $5. This year there are two megabaskets, valued at more than $800 each. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20. Winners will be drawn at the Celebration, but you need not be present to win.

Our auction will truly celebrate the wonderful people hailing from and living in our area. We will feature returning favorites and new standouts—a restaurant package; artwork; glass work; fabric pieces; and entertainment and home décor offerings and services. And we will be auctioning a signed copy of Gloversville native, Joseph E. Persico’s latest book, Roosevelt’s Centurions: FDR and the Commanders He Led to Victory in World War II.

The event will be catered by the Union Hall Inn. There will be food stations serving sweet and savory small bites. Limited first‐floor seating will be available—plenty of seating upstairs. Admission is $30. Reservations may be made in the library.
